Zafon's Barcelona is gloony, cold ,rainny, dark. Falcones' is sunny, with a God-sent Mediterranean breeze. Probably, Martinez Zafon depicts a city to go with the sordid theme of his novels. My perception of the real Barcelona is closer to Facones's. In my opinion, what detracted from the pleasure of reading the book, was the frequent and confusing practice of changing from one story to a different one within the same chapter, with no separation, to help the reader notice the change.
Sometimes you have to read far into the paragraph to realize it is a new or different story. The good news is that this practice is not present in his following book " La Reina Descalza".

You cannot help marveling at the innate goodness of the principle character. I read it in the original-Spanish so I can't vouch for the English version. Lo recomiendo para todos aquellos que gustan de conocer la historia de una manera amena. Lo tuve que abandonar como a la cuarta parte.
Novela Histã³rica - AbeBooks
Undoubtedly an excellent novel, admirably written and researched, particularly on Catalan history. The subject is very interesting but somehow I couldn't help comparing it to "The pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett, one of the very best novels I ever read, also about cathedral building but in medieval England. The truth is, I find the history of Catalonia a bit confusing in La Catedral del Mar and could never truly "get into it". What other items do customers buy after viewing this item? Barry will lull you right under his spell and into a wary sympathy for the pain of these men with their battered, hopeful hearts. Try James Joyce. Try Roddy Doyle. Try Patrick McCabe. Try Wilde, try McGahern, try Behan. And now try the name Kevin Barry. See how it fits in perfectly among the others—Kevin Barry is one of the most original, daring, and seriously funny writers ever to come out of Ireland.
I loved the potent truth of it all, drenched in damage and romance. The Barry turn of phrase is a true wonder of this world. The novel carries a beautiful, mournful undertow to it, which is particularly affecting in a book so heavy with old myth and new poetry.
May he keep twisting literature forever. As far as bleak Irish fiction goes, this is black tar heroin. Read An Excerpt. Hardcover —. Add to Cart.
